DETAILS

We designed the OB1 to be the ultimate one bike for every road. That's why the OB1 frameset is snappy, responsive, spirited on the road, and confidence-inspiring on the dirt. With an endurance road geometry, clearance for wide 650B tires, and mounting points for all your gear, the OB1 frameset is optimized for performance and serviceability and built to last a long time.

Frame

From road to gravel to travel, our OB1 frameset is ready for every road. Its sleek road-bike design hides clearance for wide dirt tires and discreet mounting points for bags, fenders, racks, extra bottles, and everything else the ride demands. From reinforcement at every hole and boss, to anti-corrosive fiberglass where carbon meets metal, to bolt-secured aluminum cable guides, we've invested in the details to deliver you performance without compromise.

- Endurance road geometry
- Clearance for 650B x 47mm or 700C x 40mm tires
- Discreet mounting points for: (5) bottle cages, racks, fenders, bento, and clip-on accessories
- Clean internal routing for hoses and full cable housings, with foam sleeves sheathing for sound dampening
- Round, dropper-ready 27.2 seat tube
- Accommodates up to 46t single or 50/34t double chainrings
- Reinforced Toray 800/700 blend carbon construction
- Fiberglass anti-corrosive layer at seatpost, bottom bracket, and headset interfaces
- 1145g +/- 5% (medium, black finish, frame w/o hardware)

Fork

We created SteerSafe to ensure your carbon steerer is fully supported against stem clamping forces. SteerSafe is an aluminum tube with built-in starnut that gets bonded into our carbon steerers at the factory. To shorten a SteerSafe equipped steerer, simply cut through the carbon and aluminum layers using a guide and a carbon-specific blade as you would a normal carbon steerer, then use ultra-fine sandpaper to create a smooth, slightly rounded edge. Finish by torquing the lubricated stem bolts to 5 Nm.

- Steersafe -equipped carbon steerer
- Clearance for 650b x 47mm | 700c x 40mm tires
- Discreet bosses for fenders, racks, and (2) bottles
- 12mm thru axle dropouts
- Reinforced Toray 800/700 carbon construction
- 545g +/-5% fork, 45g SteerSafe (eliminates compression plug)

Add-Ons

THESIS Ultralight Bolt-On Thru Axle Set
$49

Each thru axle is machined from a single billet of ultra-premium 7075 aluminum. With a built-in washer for smooth installation, our bolt-on thru-axles offer stiffness, security, and easy wheel removal without the extra ~100g of weight of levered designs and uses your cycling multitool's 6mm hex wrench.

- Hollow bolt-on with 6mm hex head
- Thread length and pitch matched to OB1 frame/fork
- 12mm front | rear
- Machined 7075 aluminum
- 82g +/- 5% per set

THESIS 2-Piece Aluminum Interlocking Bottom Bracket
$49

Cheap plastic "Press Fit" bottom brackets need to die. Bottom brackets experience extreme loads under harsh conditions. Yet despite years of complaints, many companies are still pressing cheap plastic "Press Fit" or "PF" BB shells directly into their frames to cut cost without you noticing. This practice predictably results in poor bearing alignment and support, increased friction under load, accelerated wear, creaking, and in extreme cases even irreparable damage to the frame.

Our precision-milled aluminum bearing cups thread into each other to create a stiff, robust, and perfectly aligned shell to support our widely-spaced, large-ball cartridge bearings. It's the same $70+ solution that mechanics turn to when others' Press Fit BBs fail. Sure, it adds a few grams and quite a bit of cost, but the result is an efficient-under-load, durable, and easily serviceable BB that won't let you down.

- Precision-milled aluminum shell
- Premium stainless steel sealed cartridge bearings
- Wide BB386 bearing stance

THESIS Ultralight 3D Forged Seatpost
$35

OB1's seatpost weighs less than some carbon posts yet is safe to use with clamp-on accessories like bikepacking seat bags. Its quill is forged from a single billet of ultra-premium 2014-T6 aluminum for excellent strength to weight. The 2-bolt head and oversized lower clamp plate offer superior saddle security, support, and micro-adjustability.

This seatpost can be shortened using a standard steerer cutting guide and 32TPI hacksaw blade. Just be sure that there's at least 105mm of insertion into the frame (more is better) and that you sand or file the cut edges to round them off and remove burrs.

- 1-piece 3D forged 2014-T6 aluminum quill
- Micro-adjustable 2-bolt clamp
- Broadly supportive lower clamp
- 0 offset to match OB1's 73° seattube angle
- 230g +/-5% (400mm), 210g +/-5% (350mm)

THESIS Ultralight Stem
$35

A top-of-the-line stem equivalent to others retailing at $100 or more, our 7050-series aluminum stem is strong and stiff yet lighter than others' $250+ carbon stems.

- 3D forged 7050 aluminum
- 7° angle
- 105g (100mm)

Choice of: 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 mm lengths

The OB1

Since weights will vary depending on frame size, build and other selections, here are a few examples and their weights:

  • 18.5lbs: Size L, raw black carbon frame, 1 x 11, 11-42T, standard seatpost, 700C wheelset
  • 19.9lbs: Size M, painted frame, 1 x 11, 11-42T, dropper seat post, 650B wheelset
  • 20.0lbs: Size L, raw black carbon frame, 1 x 11, 11-46T, dropper seat post, 650B wheelset
650B x 47mm, or 700C x 40mm. The OB1's 650B x 47mm WTB Byways sit almost 50mm wide on our 27.3ID rims and offer just over 4mm of chainstay clearance. We know of at least two knobbier options in this size that will be available soon, and we've run the slightly wider 48mm Panaracer Gravel King SKs without issue.  Some tires marketed as 700C x 42mm may also work, and we'll update this section once we've had an opportunity to test them. And don't worry: the 700C x 30mm road slicks that come standard on our aero-wide road rims look great in the frame (they sit 31mm and have the same outer diameter as the 650B x 47mm option) and the rims are plenty wide enough to support the biggest tires that will fit in the frame.
The Pantone code of the warm red frame is "Warm Red C" and the electric blue is "801 C".
You may have noticed that some of our scenery photography is left over from our prototype bikes and shows bikes with blue decals. Our final production bikes will look very close to what you see with the white background photos (here's an example), featuring silver reflective decals and our updated logo that you see at the top of this website.

- 2 bottle mounts in the front triangle
- 1 bottle mount below the downtube
- 1 bento mount on the top tube
- 2 bottle/lightweight gear mounts on the fork blades
- Front and rear fender mounts (seat stay bridge included)
- Rear rack mounts (max 15kg)
- Wide central clamping area on handlebar
- Clampable aluminum seatpost (included even when dropper is added)

Note: For optimum performance, load your heaviest items in a frame bag secured in the main triangle.

Max weight of rider + gear: 120kg (264lb)

Pretty darn easy. It takes less than 90 seconds. See it in action below:

OB1 Assembly and Fit

Factory assembled bikes are often poorly put together and rarely fit right out the box. Investing in a frame up build and fit by a local professional results in a more comfortable, better performing, and longer lasting bicycle. That’s why we ship your OB1 to you 20% assembled and pass on the savings. And here’s the crazy thing: once all costs are factored in, you actually end up spending less for a bicycle built right for you.
We strongly recommend bringing your OB1 to a member of the Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association. PBMA's certified mechanics and fitters are some of the best in the business. A typical professional build and basic fit will usually run between $200-$329, with an advanced fit running more. You can also work with your favorite local bike shop.
If you’re a professional bicycle mechanic, absolutely. Otherwise, we very strongly recommend you to work with one (see "How do I find a mechanic to assemble my bike?" above). Building a high-end bicycle from the frame up requires specialized skills, tools, materials, and techniques. Improper assembly can result in premature wear, component failure, a crash, injury, and even death. There is no better performance enhancer than a professional build and fit, and no better insurance against a broken body or bike. We require you to sign a waiver acknowledging that you are either a professional bicycle mechanic, are bringing your OB1 to a certified and insured mechanic or shop, or accept the risks of not doing so.
While this is not an option today, we are considering it for the future. This may include partial assembly (where we tackle the hard stuff like installing and bleeding brakes) or a more standard 90% assembly. Either way, we'll be investing in having it done by a certified professional mechanic. All that said, there really is no more effective investment in performance, comfort, durability, and safety than a build and fit with a local professional. And it’s actually more cost-effective than if we offered it as a generic factory-assembled bike (see "Why does the OB1 come 20% assembled?" above). That’s why we’ll always recommend the 20% assembled bike for our personal friends. We’re also exploring future partnerships with service providers who will do a professional build and fit for you.

Customizing Your OBI

Yep. Right here.
Let’s get you an amazing fit. If you find that you need a different size for your stem, crank, or handlebar, drop us a line at support@thesis.bike and we’ll get you a replacement at a reasonable price.
Yes you can! We offer a “custom paint” option at checkout for +$199. Just give us the Pantone number of the color you love. Note that U colors are uncoated, and C colors are coated. We highly recommend using a physical Pantone color guide to choose your color, as it often differs significantly from what you see on your screen.
Lucky for you, our standard “Black Carbon Matte” finish doubles as a primer for custom paint. And because your frameset comes unassembled in its own box, your painter won't have to strip off all the parts before getting to work. We'd love to see what you come up with, so please send us photos. :)
There's a good chance we can help. Drop us a line at support@thesis.bike with the build you have in mind to get started.
Based on feedback from a number of customers, we decided to remove the SRAM Rival 2x11 drivetrain option. We are actively exploring an even better replacement.

The original OB1 was created with a point of view on 1x drivetrians. While it may seem counter-intuitive to riders coming off traditional road bikes, we see 1x drivetrains as having a number of advantages and few disadvantages relative to 2x. These include:
    • Simple up/down shifting with no cross-chaining or chain-rub.
    • Simpler set-up, calibration, and servicing.
    • Clutch mechanism on the rear derailleur virtually eliminates chain slap/drop (a real issue on dirt).
    • Cage-lock feature on SRAM's 1x rear derailleurs makes for easy swapping between wheelsets.
    • The front shifter (standard on every OB1) is freed up to actuate a dropper post, making for a far more ergonomic and intuitive cockpit.
    • Gearing range can be calibrated upward or downward simply by swapping in a different chainring (note: may also require re-sizing or replacing your chain).
    • Less expensive up front and over the life of your bike.

As 1x11 gearing range is comparable to a typical 2x11 drivetrain, the only potential downside of 1x11 is larger jumps between cogs. We've found that most riders adjust to this almost immediately, particularly those who mountain bike (most mountain bikers ditched the front derailleur long ago).

OB1 Maintenance

Clamping a dropper is not recommended and can damage the post. Same is true of hanging a dropper-equipped bike by its seat.
Lightweight saddlebags are generally fine as long as they attach only to the saddle rails and do not interfere with the operation of the dropper through its full travel. Large and heavy seat bags are not recommended.

Wheelsets

650B x 47mm, which sit almost 50mm wide on our 27.3ID rims. We’ve also run the 48mm Panaracer GravelKing SKs with no issues, though they sit ~51mm and thus have a smidge less than our 4mm of recommended clearance. Because 650Bx47mm tires have the same radius as 700Cx30mm, handling remains constant when swapping wheelsets (except, of course, for differences related to the tires themselves).

700C x 40mm. The 22ID rims are aero-optimized for 28-30mm slicks but offer a wide base of support for running higher volume tires at low pressures without inducing tire squirm. Some 42mm tires will also fit, but we’ve not yet tested them and riders on smaller frames may experience toe overlap issues. Note that clearing larger 700C tires would have required a longer/slacker geometry, thus compromising handling.

Yep. Our wheelsets are carefully hand-built by a professional mechanic.

Shipping, Returns, and Warranty

By skipping the middlemen in the traditional bike industry, we cut the price of a high-end carbon bike in half. You can learn more on our blog post How we created a high-end carbon dream bike for $2999.
We generally ask folks to expect 8-12 weeks, though you can see latest shipping time status here. This is because your customized bike is “made to order”, and because minimizing inventory sitting in warehouses is part of what brings the OB1 from over $6000 retail down to $2999. We expect to reduce lead times as we grow.
Shipping is a flat $99. At the time of this writing, taxes are only charged for delivery addresses in the state of California (7.25% for the state, potentially additional for your city or county).
For standard bikes, we allow a full refund within 30 days of delivery for new and unopened products. Please see our Return Policy for more details.
Yep. Please visit our Warranty page for full details.
Rather than heavily marking up our products and then offering “discounted” crash replacements, we’re proud to give you the same direct pricing at all times. If you need a replacement part not already listed on our website, we’ll do our best to get one to you at a similarly outstanding value. Contact us at support@thesis.bike to get started.
At the moment, the OB1 is available in the United States. We are exploring expansion into other countries for 2019. Send a note to support@thesis.bike if you'd like to request for your country to be added to the list. We'll be prioritizing by the number of requests we see.

In the meantime, we've heard that folks outside the US are shipping to friends and relatives in the US. We're also offering pickup orders from our workshop in San Francisco if you don't have a US address. Just contact us if you'd like to pick up your order from our workshop.
Awesome! For group sales, reach out to us at hello@thesis.bike.
Yes! Once you add an item to your cart, instead of hitting "check out", you will see a PayPal button underneath it. Once you log in to PayPal, it will offer you several options for paying, and at the bottom, you'll see a purple box for PayPal Credit. It offers no interest if paid in full in 6 months. We're working with other vendors for more financing options in the future.
