Our Ultra-Wide 650B wheelsets are built to be light, strong, and durable. Whether powering up gravel climbs, shredding singletrack, or loading up for a multi-day bikepacking adventure, you won't find a more capable wheelset.

Starting with a lightweight XC mountain bike rim, we added graphene nanoparticles to the resin to bring strength and impact resistance up to an all-mountain standard, then hand-built them with DT350 hubs and 28 top-quality spokes for a high-performance wheelset designed to last for years.

Pioneering graphene technology

Graphene has long been touted as the supermaterial of the future. It’s only now that manufacturing advances have made it possible for this wonder material to be used in carbon fiber composites. The addition of graphene nanoparticles to the resin more than doubles its bond strength while preventing micro-fractures from propagating, improving impact resistance of our rims by over 20%.

The venerated DT Swiss DT350 hubset

We believe in investing where it counts. That’s why we went with one of the strongest, most reliable hubs in the industry.

The DT350 rear hub features the famed star ratchet engagement system, which is twice as strong and five times more durable than most competing pawl-based systems.

Both front and rear hubs feature high quality sealed cartridge bearings and hand-swappable end caps for adapting to various dropout standards. Strong and durable enough for downhill racing and loaded touring, these lightweight hubs are an obvious choice for a wheelset built to last.

Laser-focused on every last detail

Many weight weenie wheelsets will use 24 or even 21 spokes per wheel to shave weight at the expense of stiffness and durability. We went with 28 lightweight cold-forged bladed aero spokes, built by hand, for a wheel that’s stiffer, stronger, more durable, and just as fast.

A single length of J-bend spoke is used throughout, making them easy to source and replace. We also use exposed brass nipples, prized by mechanics for their durability and serviceability.

Extreme loads and environmental stresses make rear hubs notoriously prone to failure. That's why we invested in DT Swiss's rightfully venerated DT350 rear hub. It features the famously strong and durable Star Ratchet engagement system, large 6902 sealed cartridge bearings, tool-less serviceability and convertibility to other axle or freehub standards, and a centerlock interface for easy rotor installation and removal.

This hub is more than twice as strong, 5x more durable, and 3x more expensive than the traditional pawl-based models some brands employ to reduce cost, while weighing only a few grams more than the under-built models often employed to achieve attention grabbing weights at the expense of durability.

Don't be fooled. We've reviewed the testing data, talked to mechanics, and have been abusing DT Star Ratchet hubs ourselves for over 15 years. WHY WE CHOSE IT

DT350 front hubs are famously durable, serviceable, and adaptable. They also achieve their light weight without resorting to durability-compromising tricks. What do we mean? Just as there are brands that will use failure-prone aluminum nipples to shave grams, there are others who may spec a hub with tiny bearings and a narrow hub shell to achieve an eye-catching weight. However, those small bearings wear out fast, and that narrow shell may not withstand the torsional loads associated with disc brakes.

WHY WE CHOSE IT

Why invest so much on so many fancy bladed spokes? Because the same cold-forging process that turns a length of round straight-gauge wire into a light and aero bladed spoke also improves strength-to-weight and elastication by realigning the grain flow of the metal and reducing its cross-sectional area. The result is a spoke that can be run at high tension while experiencing less change in tension and thus fatigue with each wheel rotation or impact. Furthermore, unlike cheaper round "butted" spokes that are in fact cold-forged in a similar process, bladed spokes can easily be built into a wheel and later trued without inducing spoke wind-up, further extending the life of the wheel. To cap it off, we went with a single length of J-Bend spoke to make it easier to find should one fail, and avoided low spoke counts to make it unlikely one ever will.

Aluminum oxidizes and is much softer than brass, making aluminum nipples notoriously prone to seizure, splitting, and failure. The result is that a simple wheel true can turn into a costly rebuild with new nipples and spokes. Weight savings? Less than 18 grams per wheel.

As for the hidden nipples used by some uber expensive brands, no one envies having to remove your tires, sealant, rim tape, and valve stems just to perform necessary maintenance. Aerodynamic advantage? Zero. Zilch. Nada.

The OB1

Since weights will vary depending on frame size, build and other selections, here are a few examples and their weights:

  • 18.5lbs: Size L, raw black carbon frame, 1 x 11, 11-42T, standard seatpost, 700C wheelset
  • 19.9lbs: Size M, painted frame, 1 x 11, 11-42T, dropper seat post, 650B wheelset
  • 20.0lbs: Size L, raw black carbon frame, 1 x 11, 11-46T, dropper seat post, 650B wheelset
650B x 47mm, or 700C x 40mm. The OB1's 650B x 47mm WTB Byways sit almost 50mm wide on our 27.3ID rims and offer just over 4mm of chainstay clearance. We know of at least two knobbier options in this size that will be available soon, and we've run the slightly wider 48mm Panaracer Gravel King SKs without issue.  Some tires marketed as 700C x 42mm may also work, and we'll update this section once we've had an opportunity to test them. And don't worry: the 700C x 30mm road slicks that come standard on our aero-wide road rims look great in the frame (they sit 31mm and have the same outer diameter as the 650B x 47mm option) and the rims are plenty wide enough to support the biggest tires that will fit in the frame.
The Pantone code of the warm red frame is "Warm Red C" and the electric blue is "801 C".
You may have noticed that some of our scenery photography is left over from our prototype bikes and shows bikes with blue decals. Our final production bikes will look very close to what you see with the white background photos (here's an example), featuring silver reflective decals and our updated logo that you see at the top of this website.

OB1 Assembly and Fit

Factory assembled bikes are often poorly put together and rarely fit right out the box. Investing in a frame up build and fit by a local professional results in a more comfortable, better performing, and longer lasting bicycle. That’s why we ship your OB1 to you 80% unassembled and pass on the savings. And here’s the crazy thing: once all costs are factored in, you actually end up spending less for a bicycle built right for you.
We strongly recommend bringing your OB1 to a member of the Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association. PBMA's certified mechanics and fitters are some of the best in the business. A typical professional build and basic fit will usually run between $200-$329, with an advanced fit running more. You can also work with your favorite local bike shop.
If you’re a professional bicycle mechanic, absolutely. Otherwise, we very strongly recommend you to work with one (see "How do I find a mechanic to assemble my bike?" above). Building a high-end bicycle from the frame up requires specialized skills, tools, materials, and techniques. Improper assembly can result in premature wear, component failure, a crash, injury, and even death. There is no better performance enhancer than a professional build and fit, and no better insurance against a broken body or bike. We require you to sign a waiver acknowledging that you are either a professional bicycle mechanic, are bringing your OB1 to a certified and insured mechanic or shop, or accept the risks of not doing so.
While this is not an option today, we are considering it for the future. This may include partial assembly (where we tackle the hard stuff like installing and bleeding brakes) or a more standard 90% assembly. Either way, we'll be investing in having it done by a certified professional mechanic. All that said, there really is no more effective investment in performance, comfort, durability, and safety than a build and fit with a local professional. And it’s actually more cost-effective than if we offered it as a generic factory-assembled bike (see "Why does the OB1 come 80% unassembled?" above). That’s why we’ll always recommend the 80% unassembled bike for our personal friends. We’re also exploring future partnerships with service providers who will do a professional build and fit for you.

Yes you can! We offer a “custom paint” option at checkout for +$199. Just give us the Pantone number of the color you love. Note that U colors are uncoated, and C colors are coated. We highly recommend using a physical Pantone color guide to choose your color, as it often differs significantly from what you see on your screen.
Lucky for you, our standard “Black Carbon Matte” finish doubles as a primer for custom paint. And because your frameset comes unassembled in its own box, your painter won't have to strip off all the parts before getting to work. We'd love to see what you come up with, so please send us photos. :)

Based on feedback from a number of customers, we decided to remove the SRAM Rival 2x11 drivetrain option. We are actively exploring an even better replacement.

The original OB1 was created with a point of view on 1x drivetrians. While it may seem counter-intuitive to riders coming off traditional road bikes, we see 1x drivetrains as having a number of advantages and few disadvantages relative to 2x. These include:
    • Simple up/down shifting with no cross-chaining or chain-rub.
    • Simpler set-up, calibration, and servicing.
    • Clutch mechanism on the rear derailleur virtually eliminates chain slap/drop (a real issue on dirt).
    • Cage-lock feature on SRAM's 1x rear derailleurs makes for easy swapping between wheelsets.
    • The front shifter (standard on every OB1) is freed up to actuate a dropper post, making for a far more ergonomic and intuitive cockpit.
    • Gearing range can be calibrated upward or downward simply by swapping in a different chainring (note: may also require re-sizing or replacing your chain).
    • Less expensive up front and over the life of your bike.

As 1x11 gearing range is comparable to a typical 2x11 drivetrain, the only potential downside of 1x11 is larger jumps between cogs. We've found that most riders adjust to this almost immediately, particularly those who mountain bike (most mountain bikers ditched the front derailleur long ago).

OB1 Maintenance

Clamping a dropper is not recommended and can damage the post. Same is true of hanging a dropper-equipped bike by its seat.
Lightweight saddlebags are generally fine as long as they attach only to the saddle rails and do not interfere with the operation of the dropper through its full travel. Large and heavy seat bags are not recommended.

Wheelsets

650B x 47mm, which sit almost 50mm wide on our 27.3ID rims. We’ve also run the 48mm Panaracer GravelKing SKs with no issues, though they sit ~51mm and thus have a smidge less than our 4mm of recommended clearance. Because 650Bx47mm tires have the same radius as 700Cx30mm, handling remains constant when swapping wheelsets (except, of course, for differences related to the tires themselves).

700C x 40mm. The 22ID rims are aero-optimized for 28-30mm slicks but offer a wide base of support for running higher volume tires at low pressures without inducing tire squirm. Some 42mm tires will also fit, but we’ve not yet tested them and riders on smaller frames may experience toe overlap issues. Note that clearing larger 700C tires would have required a longer/slacker geometry, thus compromising handling.

Shipping, Returns, and Warranty

By skipping the middlemen in the traditional bike industry, we cut the price of a high-end carbon bike in half. You can learn more on our blog post How we created a high-end carbon dream bike for $2999.
During Summer 2018, the time between pre-order and delivery will take between 12-16 weeks. This is because your customized bike is “made to order”, and because minimizing inventory sitting in warehouses is part of what brings the OB1 from over $6000 retail down to $2999. We expect to reduce lead times as we grow.
Shipping is a flat $99. At the time of this writing, taxes are only charged for delivery addresses in the state of California (7.25% for the state, potentially additional for your city or county).

Return Policy

You may return new, unused, unassembled products purchased from us within 30 days of delivery for a full refund minus the cost of shipping. The following terms apply to each such return:

  • New, unused, unassembled products must be returned in the same condition in which you received them, and with the original box and/or packaging intact, including manufacturer tags where applicable.
  • If your shipment came in multiple boxes, the 30 day window will begin from the day you received your last (most recent) box.
  • If your product was damaged in transit before you received it, you have 7 days from time of receipt to inform us of any damage. 
  • We do not accept returns on assembled products, modified products, used products, or products ordered with custom paint.

Component Swapping Program

Let’s get you an amazing fit. If you find that you need a different size for your stem, crank, or handlebar, drop us a line at support@thesis.bike and we’ll get you a replacement at a reasonable price.

 


No-Bull Crash Replacement

Rather than heavily marking up our products and then offering “discounted” crash replacements, we’re proud to give you the same direct pricing at all times. Warranty

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF ASSEMBLY RESPONSIBILITY
Your THESIS bike was delivered to your shipping address 80% unassembled. By purchasing a THESIS bicycle, you understand it is 80% unassembled and that improper assembly can result in product damage or failure that may lead to injury or death. You agree to choose and pay for a qualified and insured professional mechanic for frame up assembly, or else that you are a qualified professional mechanic assembling it yourself. You further agree not to hold THESIS liable for any damages resulting from assembly.

COVERAGE
Every bike purchased from THESIS is covered under our limited warranty program. The program grants a five (5) year limited warranty for the frame and fork, starting from the date of purchase, for the original purchaser against manufacturing and/or workmanship defects under normal and intended use.The program grants a two (2) year limited warranty for all other components, starting from the date of purchase, for the original purchaser against manufacturing and/or workmanship defects under normal and intended use.

Certain components may have limited warranties of their own that are offered by the component manufacturer, in which case we will refer you to the component manufacturer for service.

If a valid claim is received within the warranty period, THESIS will choose to either repair the product at no charge, using new or refurbished replacement parts; or replace the product or part with a new one that is at least functionally equivalent to the original product. The original of any product or component that is replaced under warranty must be returned to THESIS and becomes THESIS property.

For warranty service or questions, please contact THESIS at support@thesis.bike. Do not return your bicycle to THESIS without first speaking with our staff and obtaining a written return authorization. Please have your receipt or proof of purchase ready. You are responsible for the cost of shipping warranty returns to THESIS and return shipping to your address.

Non-covered events in the warranty include, but are not limited to:

  • improper assembly;
  • paint damage, fading or changes in color;
  • crashes, misuse, or neglect;
  • normal wear and tear;
  • modifications to frame, fork, or components;
  • mounting and alteration of additional components that were not expressly approved by us or replacement of our original components by components that do not have a similar quality;
  • improper use;
  • or excessive load.

The THESIS limited warranty does not include consumables or normal wear and tear parts, such as chain, cables, bar tape, chainrings, cassettes, pulley wheels, bearings, gears cables, tires, saddle covering, and brake pads.

SHIPPING DAMAGE CLAIMS
Please immediately inspect your product(s) for damage. We will not accept shipping damage claims later than 7 days from receipt of product. Take pictures of any damage that is found, and date the images when possible. Keep all packaging and paperwork until the inspection process is complete. ADDITIONAL TERMS
The THESIS limited warranty as stated in this document provides the sole and exclusive remedy in lieu of all other of all other rights and remedies, including but not limited to implied warranties, contract rights, tort, negligence, strict liability, and other remedies expressed or implied at law or in equity. In no event shall THESIS be liable for special, indirect, incidental, economic or consequential damages, loss or damage to property other than the product itself, loss of use of property, loss of profits, business interruption, punitive damages, contribution, indemnification, or other losses, whatever the cause, including the fault or negligence of THESIS. If any part of this Limited Warranty is deemed to be not legal or enforceable, the remainder shall be given full force and effect.

CLAIMS TO BE RESOLVED BY ARBITRATION / WAIVER OF CLASS ACTION AND JURY TRIAL
If you have a claim against us, you agree that it will be resolved by binding arbitration brought before a single, neutral arbitrator in the State of California, County of San Francisco. Without your agreement to binding arbitration, we would be unable to provide our products and services to you on the same terms. Your agreement to binding arbitration means that you give up your right to sue us in a court of law, except that you may bring a claim in small claims court if your claim qualifies to be heard there. Any arbitration will be conducted and governed by the California Arbitration Act. You also agree not to bring a class action suit against us, and we each waive any right to a jury trial in any dispute. The above does not preclude any party from bringing an action to such equitable relief, if that is the only available appropriate relief under the circumstances.

BY ACCEPTING THESE TERMS, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT YOU ARE WAIVING YOUR RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL AND ANY RIGHTS YOU MAY HAVE TO BRING ANY CLAIMS ON A CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION BASIS.

APPLICABLE LAW
The laws of the State of California and federal law, to the extent applicable, govern the use of the Sites and these Legal Notices without reference to choice of law provisions. Any claim which qualifies to be filed in a court of law will be heard exclusively in the state or federal courts located in the State of California, County of San Francisco.
